    Strategies for typecase optimization

    International audienceWe contrast two approaches to optimizing the Common Lisp typecase macro expansion. The first approach is based on heuristics intended to estimate run time performance of certain type checks involving Common Lisp type specifiers. The technique may, depending on code size, exhaustively search the space of permutations of the type checks, intent on finding the optimal order. With the second technique, we represent a typecase form as a type specifier, encapsulating the side-effecting non-Boolean parts so as to appear compatible with the Common Lisp type algebra operators. The encapsulated expressions are specially handled so that the Common Lisp type algebra functions preserve them, and we can unwrap them after a process of Boolean reduction into efficient Common Lisp code, maintaining the appropriate side effects but eliminating unnecessary type checks. Both approaches allow us to identify un-reachable code, test for exhaustiveness of the clauses and eliminate type checks which are calculated to be redundant

    Performance assessment of urban precinct design: a scoping study

    Executive Summary: Significant advances have been made over the past decade in the development of scientifically and industry accepted tools for the performance assessment of buildings in terms of energy, carbon, water, indoor environment quality etc. For resilient, sustainable low carbon urban development to be realised in the 21st century, however, will require several radical transitions in design performance beyond the scale of individual buildings. One of these involves the creation and application of leading edge tools (not widely available to built environment professions and practitioners) capable of being applied to an assessment of performance across all stages of development at a precinct scale (neighbourhood, community and district) in either greenfield, brownfield or greyfield settings. A core aspect here is the development of a new way of modelling precincts, referred to as Precinct Information Modelling (PIM) that provides for transparent sharing and linking of precinct object information across the development life cycle together with consistent, accurate and reliable access to reference data, including that associated with the urban context of the precinct. Neighbourhoods are the ‘building blocks’ of our cities and represent the scale at which urban design needs to make its contribution to city performance: as productive, liveable, environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive places (COAG 2009). Neighbourhood design constitutes a major area for innovation as part of an urban design protocol established by the federal government (Department of Infrastructure and Transport 2011, see Figure 1). The ability to efficiently and effectively assess urban design performance at a neighbourhood level is in its infancy.     Inpatient charges and mental illness: Findings from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample 1999–2007

    Inpatient costs related to mental illness are substantial, though declining as a percentage of overall mental health treatment costs. The public sector has become increasingly involved in funding and providing mental health services. Nationwide Inpatient Sample data for the years 1999–2007 were used to: 1) examine Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance charges related to mental illness hospitalizations, including trends over time; and 2) examine trends in mental comorbidity with physical illness and its effect on charges. There were an estimated 12.4 million mental illness discharges during the 9-year period, with Medicare being the primary payer for 4.3 million discharges, Medicaid for 3.3 million, private insurance for 3.2 million, and 1.6 million for all other payers. Mean inflation-adjusted charges per hospitalization were US17,528,US17,528, US15,651, US10,539,andUS10,539, and US11,663, respectively. Charges to public sources increased for schizophrenia and dementia-related discharges, with little private/public change noted for mood disorders. Comorbid mood disorders increased dramatically from 1.5 million discharges in 1999 to 3.4 million discharges in 2007. Comorbid illness was noted in 14.0% of the 342 million inpatient discharges during the study period and was associated with increased charges for some medical conditions and decreased charges for other medical conditions
